On September 30, Maccabi Tel Aviv host Besiktas in their first home game of the EuroLeague season. On the official schedule, the Israeli club's venue is still listed as Belgrade. But according to a report by CyprusBasket, Maccabi's management has formally submitted a request to the Republic of Cyprus, asking to use the island as its home base for the coming season. The first contact took place during the Neophytos Chandriotis tournament, where Maccabi was one of the participating teams, with owner Simon Mizrahi personally pushing the talks. According to the same report, Cyprus is responding positively. Two arenas are considered the most viable: Spyros Kyprianou in Limassol and Tassos Papadopoulos in Nicosia. A decision is expected very soon. To understand why an Israeli club has to look for a home court in a third country, you have to look at how the EuroLeague has operated over the past two seasons. Israeli teams are allowed to play at home during certain windows; outside those windows, they must choose a neutral venue. Last season both Maccabi and Hapoel Tel Aviv fell under this mechanism, and Oded Kattash's side used Belgrade as its base. The EuroLeague listed Belgrade on the schedule, Maccabi's home games were played there, and the system ran smoothly enough that nobody reopened the file mid-season. One point needs to be stated clearly: in the EuroLeague, "home" is a contractual term, not merely an address. It is tied to ticket allocation, broadcast scheduling, sponsorship activation and security responsibility for each game. Changing venue in mid-September means renegotiating a stack of already-signed agreements. The final call belongs to the league office, after assessments from the relevant parties. A nod from the Cypriot government alone does not put a game in Limassol or Nicosia. Alongside the venue story, another administrative clock is ticking. Maccabi is facing an obstacle in registering Yam Madar for the EuroLeague because of a debt to Hapoel. On the court, the team has just beaten Dimitris Itoudis's Hapoel to win the Israeli Super Cup, a sign that the basketball side has not been dragged down by the noise behind the scenes. For Maccabi, that means a fan base capable of filling an arena every two weeks. For Cyprus, it means hotel and restaurant revenue and a promotional angle beyond beach tourism.
